The Opportunity
We have an exciting opportunity for an Environment Officer to be a part of our Environment team within Roads and Maritime Services. This position plays a key role in our Stakeholder Management and Community Engagement division.

The role provides expert advice and assistance to staff and Roads and Maritime contractors on a range of sustainability, environmental management, assessment and compliance requirements for Roads and Maritime activities to achieve required Government environmental outcomes and meet the expectations of the community of New South Wales.

We are looking for an Environment Officer who has good understanding of RMS environment compliance framework and is flexible to work outside normal working hours or travel.

Due to the growth of our business and an expanded portfolio of projects, an exciting opportunity exists for a highly motivated Senior Sustainability Consultant to join our team. 

As part of the Environment and Resources team, this role covers a broad range of skills relating to sustainability consulting. The primary focus of this role is to contribute to developing the sustainability consulting services of our business, supporting our clients and building a profitable Environment and Resources team. 


The Senior Sustainability Consultant will undertake design, project management and consulting services within the sustainability field, in order to enhance the team’s portfolio of skills and expertise. In addition, the successful candidate will: 

  • Manage a range of sustainability projects, either in support of a wider team or as the Project Manager
  • Provide sustainability expertise to multi-disciplinary project teams.
  • Help develop business in the fields of sustainability in particular infrastructure sustainability and sustainability for precinct scale development.
  • Help mentor and develop other staff in sustainability
  • Lead the sustainability input on multi-disciplinary projects, ensuring work quality is maintained at the expected standard.
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance in ISCA rated infrastructure and / or Green Star Communities 
  • Project manage sustainability led projects, including managing other staff and subconsultants
  • Work across teams and other offices within the region to resource and deliver projects, providing expertise on sustainability and utilises technical skill sets.
  • Extend relationships with existing key clients and forge new client relationships to enable an expansion of business opportunities for the Sydney office, and (where appropriate) other business groups within the region.
  • Effectively manage the cost, time and quality performance of projects in relation to the sustainability component on a larger project or total project for sustainability projects.
  • Assist in the preparation of tender submissions and presentations.
  • Prepare project reports for clients summarising key issues and advising on future actions.

You will have demonstrated:

  • 6-12 years relevant industry experience in a consulting, private industry or a government environment in sustainability;
  • Extensive knowledge and broad experience in sustainability including infrastructure sustainability, sustainability masterplanning / precinct scale development, corporate sustainability and/ or climate change;
  • Project management and business development experience would be highly regarded;
  • Membership of relevant professional institutions/professional peer bodies or significant credit towards eligibility for membership including ISCA IS Accredited Professional and GBCA Accredited Professional for GreenStar Communities.

With recognised relevant tertiary qualifications in a Sustainability related discipline (eg Environmental Science / Engineer / Planner, Sustainability related degree, Economics), you will be able to demonstrate your experience in design, project management and implementation in your field, within a consulting business environment. 

You will possess demonstrated excellent attention to detail along with high-level verbal and written communication skills. Additionally, you will have proven working knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, codes of practice, and guidelines. The ability to work independently and as part of a team is essential.
