New Version of 'Beyond the Pavement' - 2014

NSW Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) has updated its urban design manual 'Beyond the Pavement'. This 2014 document supersedes the 2009 version, which was the recipient of the Australia Award for Urban Design 2010 and the AILA National and NSW Landscape Architecture Awards in 2010.

Beyond the Pavement is referenced in ISCA's Rating Tool manual as an approved guideline for incorporating urban design principles into projects.

The document has been substantially updated with new projects and case studies for road and maritime projects, however, the philosophy and structure has remained true to the original document. Namely road and maritime projects must:

Fit sensitively with the built, natural and community environments in both urban and rural locations.Contribute to the accessibility and connectivity of communities by all modes of movement, including walking, cycling, and catching public transport.

Contribute to the overall quality of the public domain and help revitalise areas.

The document also now includes an appendix on inspirational road and transport projects around the world. The performance themes of safety, cost effectiveness and sustainability have been enhanced as have the urban design procedures and project management guidance. It reflects the change from the RTA to Roads and Maritime Services in particular the maritime work and the establishment of the Centre for Urban Design.
