Aim

By the end of this workshop, participants will understand how effective planning, procurement and delivery approaches will support social sustainability, providing socio-economic benefits and industry capability. The workshop will demonstrate how impactful social procurement requirements can be written into infrastructure planning, procurement and contracts and how contractors and suppliers can effectively respond to those requirements to maximise social and industry outcomes. Key issues will include:
  • Workforce sustainability (strategic workforce planning, jobs and skills, workforce culture and wellbeing, diversity and inclusion); and
  • Industry participation (regional and local sourcing, SME participation, supplier diversity).

Overview

Infrastructure projects and assets, large and small, can positively impact social outcomes in the communities they interact with. Infrastructure, through its delivery, operations and maintenance, has the potential to create social uplift on a local, regional or even national level. These opportunities to provide positive social outcomes are realised through choices made at different stages of an infrastructure project life cycle.
At the same time new technologies and the changing nature of work, together with recognised skills shortages in engineering, technical and trade areas is impacting the ability of Australian businesses to access suitably skilled workforces.  In addition, the current infrastructure boom means current business and workforce capacity is insufficient to meet demand and construction. These opportunities and challenges and the outcomes they create can also be impaired by poorly considered or misunderstood requirements, and lack of buy-in or drive to execute those requirements on the contractor and supplier side.
This course is designed to look at these aspects from both the contract development and contract execution point of view and provide insights and advice for improving your ability to create successful outcomes during both the delivery and operation of infrastructure.
